A Student’s Guide to Navigating the Windy City Summit
As a college student, you are focused on homework, finals, graduating and landing your ideal job. But what is that ideal job, what area will you become an expert in, how do you jump start your development as a treasury or finance professional during your college years and continue this growth beyond graduation?
Windy City Summit is here to help you explore and grow your treasury knowledge, during college and beyond graduation. To get the most out of the 2018 Windy City Summit you must first do some homework. I know, the last thing you want to do is homework, but trust me, you will be glad you completed these two short assignments.
This year’s Summit consists of over 120 educational sessions in 16 different treasury and finance fields. These sessions are at no additional cost to you and will assist in your career development! With this many choices available, you will want to read through the Educational Track & Sessions, build your agenda and attend as many classes as possible in the areas that peak your interest. The knowledge these sessions offer will assist with narrowing down your niche as you grow your profession in the industry. Preparing your agenda prior to the summit rather than during will help to ensure you attend the topics you are interested in. At no additional cost to you, these classes can be used toward the Certified Treasury Professional accreditation.
The final assignment, write and master your elevator speech. An elevator speech is a precise synopsis about you. It communicates who you are, what you’re looking for and how you can benefit a company / organization. It’s typically about 30 seconds long or the time it takes to ride a few floors in an elevator. Once mastered you will be prepared to shine at the many networking opportunities that are available at the Windy City Summit – luncheons, networking events, sessions and breaks. Use these times to connect with CEOs, CFOs, business leaders and peers in the industry to build your LinkedIn and Twitter network. These new connections can assist you when moving forward with your career.
The Windy City Summit is three days of education in Chicago with industry peers. How do you get the most value and benefits out of this event? Prepare your agenda, master your elevator speech, attend all the events you can and talk to everyone you meet, network is the key. But most of all, have fun, learn and enjoy!
